The Neo blockchain ecosystem features two native tokens: Neo (abbreviated as NEO) and NeoGas (abbreviated as GAS). Neo is a governance token with a total supply of 100 million, used to exercise governance rights within the Neo network. These rights include voting for the election of bookkeepers, changes to network parameters, and other key decisions. The smallest unit of Neo is 1, and it is indivisible. On the other hand, Gas is a utility token with a maximum supply of 100 million, used to manage and control the resources consumed on the Neo network. The network charges fees for token transfers and smart contract execution and storage, which serve to economically incentivize bookkeepers and prevent resource abuse. The smallest unit of Gas is 0.00000001. At the creation block of the Neo network, 100 million Neo tokens were minted, while no Gas tokens were initially created—the supply of Gas started at zero. Over approximately 22 years, 100 million Gas tokens corresponding to the 100 million Neo will be gradually generated and allocated to the address holding the Neo governance tokens, following a decay algorithm. When the Neo governance tokens are transferred to a new address, subsequent Gas issuance will also shift accordingly. Additionally, the Neo network sets threshold parameters via voting to allow a certain amount of transfer transactions and smart contract executions to be gas-free for storage, improving user experience. In periods of high spam transaction volume, transactions and smart contracts with verified digital identities (through NeoID) receive processing priority, while those without verified identities can gain priority by paying Gas fees. This system helps optimize network resource usage and enhances overall security.
